BÖLÜM 5: EYOBUS İLE KUZEY AVRUPA DENEYİMİ - FİNLANDİYA: HELSİNKİ

Merhaba gezisever dostlar! Baltık kıyılarında başladığımız bu macerada Tallinn’i geride bırakıp şimdi de “Bin Göller Ülkesi” Finlandiya’nın başkenti Helsinki’ye doğru uzanıyoruz. Tallinn Limanı’ndan Viking Line feribotuna bindik ve Baltık Denizi’nde süzülürken bir yandan Estonya’nın kırmızı çatılı şehir silueti yavaşça uzaklaşıyor, diğer yandan kuzeyin serin rüzgârı yeni bir maceranın kapısını aralıyordu.

Feribot Helsinki Limanı’na yaklaşırken şehri daha ilk bakışta hissettik: sakinliği, düzeni, doğayla iç içe zarif mimarisi… 315 adadan oluşan bu ada şehri, hem büyük hem ferah hem de huzurlu bir metropol olarak gönlümüzde ayrı bir yer açtı.

Helsinki: Kuzeyin Sakin, Modern ve Masalsı Şehri

Helsinki’de turistik yerler birbirine çok yakın, bu yüzden şehri yürüyerek keşfetmek büyük keyif. Geniş caddeleri, pastel renkli binaları ve Baltık esintisiyle her adımda hem doğayla hem modern yaşamla iç içe bir şehirde olduğumuzu hissettik.

Suomenlinna Adası ve Kalesi

Helsinki denince akla gelen ilk yerlerden biri tabii ki Suomenlinna! Market Square’den kalkan feribotla sadece 15 dakikada ulaştık. Altı adaya yayılmış dev bir kale kompleksi var ve biz burayı keşfederken kendimizi adeta tarih içinde yolculuk yaparken hissettik.

18. yüzyılda İsveç Krallığı tarafından inşa edilen kale, yıllar içinde kuşatmalara ve savaşlara tanıklık etmiş. 1808’de Ruslara teslim olmuş ama bugün UNESCO Dünya Mirası Listesi’nde hem müzeleri hem kafeleri hem de huzur dolu sokaklarıyla adeta açık hava müzesi gibi. Biz ada sokaklarında dolaşırken bir anda kendimizi askeri tünellerde ve deniz fenerlerinin kıyısında dalgaları dinlerken bulduk. Üstelik şehir içi biletimiz feribotta da geçerliydi; kolay ulaşılabilir bir tarih yolculuğu olmuş oldu.

Uspenski Katedrali ve Kauppatori

Senato Meydanı’ndan denize doğru yürürken karşımıza Uspenski Katedrali çıktı. Altın kubbeleriyle tam bir ihtişam ve Batı Avrupa’daki en büyük Ortodoks kilisesi olma özelliğiyle etkileyici bir durak.

Katedralin hemen yanındaki Kauppatori (Pazar Meydanı) ise tam bir şehir klasiği. Renkli tezgâhlar, balıkçılar, deniz ürünleri kokusu, taze meyveler ve hediyelik eşyalar… Biz burada hem şehrin ritmine karıştık hem de küçük alışverişler yaptık.

Senato Meydanı ve Helsinki Katedrali

Helsinki’nin kalbi diyebileceğimiz Senato Meydanı, şehrin neoklasik ruhunu en iyi yansıtan yer. Ortasında II. Aleksander’in heykeli, etrafında Helsinki Üniversitesi, Senato Binası ve bembeyaz dokusuyla Helsinki Katedrali yükseliyor.

Biz katedralin önünde durup hem dış cephesini hem de çatıdaki 12 havarinin heykellerini hayranlıkla izledik. İçerisi de oldukça sade ama etkileyici; gün içinde ışıkla birlikte değişen kubbeler inanılmaz bir manzara sunuyor.

Ada Şehri Helsinki

Suomenlinna’yı gördükten sonra “Geri kalan 300 ada nasıl acaba?” diye düşündük. Vaktiniz varsa kısa feribot seferleriyle adalar arasında minik keşifler yapmak harika. Bazısı tamamen orman, bazısı sahil yürüyüşü için ideal, bazısı ise yaz aylarında kültürel etkinlikler sunuyor. Biz birkaç tanesini keşfettik ve her biri ayrı bir sürpriz oldu.

Alışveriş: Kuzeyin Sade ve Şık Tarzı

Helsinki’de alışveriş hem kolay hem keyifli. Mağazalar sabah 9’dan akşam 9’a kadar açık ve birbirine çok yakın. Biz özellikle Mannerheimintie, Aleksanterinkatu, Bulevardi ve Esplanadi’yi tercih ettik.

Stockmann ve Sokos gibi büyük mağazalarda ise her ihtiyacı bulmak mümkün. Pazarlar ise ayrı bir dünya:

• Hakaniemi Hali: Alt katta yiyecekler, üst katta el işi ürünler

• Hietalahti Hali: Lezzetli restoranlarıyla ünlü

• Kauppatori Bit Pazarı: Deniz ürünleri, hediyelik eşyalar ve renkli tezgahlar

Bizim Notlarımız – Helsinki

Helsinki sokaklarında gezdikçe şehrin modern ruhunu her köşede hissettik. Bizim defterimize düşenler:

• Rock Church (Temppeliaukio): Kaya içine oyulmuş, akustik harikası bir kilise

• Oodi Şehir Kütüphanesi: Modern ve fonksiyonel, çalışma, dinlenme, etkinlik her şey var

• Esplanadi Parkı: Heykellerle süslü, şehrin nefes aldığı yerlerden

• Savotta Restaurant: Eski ve popüler, atmosferi unutulmaz

• Central Station: Dünyanın en güzel tren istasyonlarından biri seçilmiş

• Amos Rex: Yer altı modern sanat müzesi, mimarisi bile başlı başına etkileyici

• Kamppi Chapel: Şehrin ortasında dingin bir ahşap yapı

• Suomenlinna Fortress: UNESCO mirası, dünyanın en büyük deniz kalelerinden biri

Helsinki’ye Veda – Kuzeye Doğru Yolculuk Devam Ediyor

Helsinki, sakinliği, modern çizgisi ve doğayla iç içe yaşamıyla yolculuğumuzda en huzur veren duraklardan biri oldu. Baltık rüzgârı eşliğinde geçirdiğimiz her anı hafızamıza keyifle kazıdık.

Ama maceramız elbette burada bitmiyor! Şimdi rotamızı Baltık Denizi’nin ötesine, İsveç’in başkenti Stockholm’e çeviriyoruz. Kuzeyin bu büyüleyici şehirlerini birlikte keşfetmeye devam edeceğiz.

CHAPTER 5: NORTHERN EUROPE EXPERIENCE WITH EYOBUS – FINLAND: HELSINKI

Hello, travel-lovers! Our Baltic adventure continues. After exploring the charming streets of Tallinn, we set our sights on Helsinki, the elegant capital of Finland, the famed “Land of a Thousand Lakes.” Boarding the Viking Line ferry from Tallinn Port, we watched Estonia’s red-roofed skyline slowly fade behind us. The crisp northern breeze and the calm waters of the Baltic Sea promised that a brand-new chapter was waiting just ahead.

As we approached Helsinki Port, the city revealed its character instantly: a harmonious blend of calm, order, and nature. Spread across 315 islands, this spacious yet serene metropolis made a lasting impression from the moment we arrived.

Helsinki: A Calm, Modern & Fairytale City of the North

Helsinki is delightfully walkable. Its wide avenues, pastel-colored buildings, and refreshing Baltic air make it a city best explored on foot. Each step offered a reminder of how masterfully Helsinki balances modern life with natural beauty.

Suomenlinna Island & Fortress

No visit to Helsinki is complete without Suomenlinna. A quick 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square transported us to this massive fortress spread across six islands. As we wandered through ancient walls, tunnels, and lighthouse viewpoints, it felt like time had slowed down.

Originally built by the Swedish Crown in the 18th century, the fortress has witnessed numerous battles throughout history. Though it was surrendered to Russia in 1808, today Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a peaceful open-air museum filled with cafés, museums, and charming walkways. And yes, your regular city ticket works on the ferry too, making this historical escape incredibly easy.

Uspenski Cathedral & Kauppatori

From Senate Square, we walked toward the waterfront and soon found ourselves standing before the magnificent Uspenski Cathedral. With its golden domes and status as the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe, it’s a breathtaking sight.

Right next door lies Kauppatori (Market Square), a must-visit for anyone wanting to feel the pulse of the city. Fresh berries, seafood stalls, handcrafted gifts, local street food, this vibrant market had us immersed in Helsinki’s daily rhythm in no time.

Senate Square & Helsinki Cathedral

Senate Square is the beating heart of Helsinki’s neoclassical charm. With the statue of Alexander II at its center and the University of Helsinki and Senate Building around it, the square offers a postcard-perfect view, crowned by the iconic white Helsinki Cathedral.

We took our time admiring the cathedral’s pristine façade and the statues of the 12 apostles watching over the city from the rooftop. Inside, the minimalist Scandinavian design takes the spotlight, with daylight creating ever-changing reflections beneath the domes.

Helsinki: The City of Islands

After exploring Suomenlinna, we couldn’t help but wonder: “What about the other 300 islands?”

If you have time, short ferry rides will lead you to quiet forested islands, coastal walking paths, and summer cultural spots. Each island has its own personality, and every mini-excursion feels like discovering a hidden gem.

Shopping in Helsinki: Northern Style, Pure & Elegant

Shopping in Helsinki is effortless. Stores are open from 9 AM to 9 PM and conveniently close to one another. Our favorite streets included:

• Mannerheimintie

• Aleksanterinkatu

• Bulevardi

• Esplanadi

For everything under one roof, Stockmann and Sokos are the go-to places. But the markets truly stole our hearts:

• Hakaniemi Market Hall: Food downstairs, handmade crafts upstairs

• Hietalahti Market Hall: Famous for its delicious eateries

• Kauppatori Flea Market: Seafood, souvenirs, and lively stalls right by the sea

With every street we explored, Helsinki’s modern spirit shone through. Here are the highlights we wrote in our travel journal:

Helsinki was one of the most peaceful stops of our northern route. Its calm streets, modern design, and seamless integration with nature left us with unforgettable memories, all accompanied by the gentle breeze of the Baltic Sea.
