SPECIAL ARTICLE ON THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKIYE : "FATHER OF THE TURKS"

FATHER OF THE TURKS

"Biography of ATATURK"

“My people are going to learn the principles of democracy the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go.”

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was a Turkish nationalist leader and founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey.

Atatürk had an ordinary childhood, during his childhood and youth success, it became clear that he would be a good soldier and politician. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was born in Salonika in 1881, in what was then the Ottoman Empire (Nowadays his birthplace is now known as Thessaloniki, in Greece). His father was Ali Riza Efendi and his mother was Zübeyde Hanim. Ali Riza Efendi worked in various occupations such, a military officer, a deed officer and for some time a timber merchant. Zübeyde Hanım was a housewife. Atatürk had five siblings, but four siblings died at an early age. Only his sister Makbule Atadan survived and lived until 1956. He started to study at “Hafız Mehmet Efendi” Local School. Then, he transferred to “Şemsi Efendi” School at his father’s instigation. He lost his father in 1888 due to intestinal cancer. He started his military life with a military school at the age of twelve at “Askeri Rüştiye” Secondary School. He graduated from secondary school and then, he attended “Manastır Askeri İdadisi” Military High School in 1893. After he graduated from the Military High Scool, he went to Military Academy and he graduated from the Military Academy in 1905 as a captain (Turkish News, 2012; Wikipedia, 2017).

Atatürk performed various missions in the army and he became a successful soldier and commander until the end of his life. Ataturk, who spent most of his fighting life in wars, was always successful in these missions and wars. During the First World War (WWI), he served as the Division Commander in the Battle of Çanakkale (Gallipoli). From 1916, he served as an Army Commander on the East and South fronts. He was one of the forces that saved Bitlis and Muş from enemy invasion. He served on the Palestinian and Syrian fronts. Following the Moudros Armistice, upon the occupation of a large part of the Anatolian lands by allied powers according to the provisions of the Treaty of Sevres, the last Ottoman Sultan Vahdettin sent him to Ankara, which was not occupied (Itzkowitz, 2020).

Atatürk went to Samsun on May 19, 1919, and started the Turkish national struggle. The Amasya Circular gathered the Sivas and Erzurum Congresses. He resigned from the military mission in Ankara, Turkey. On April 23, 1920 convened the Grand National Assembly and he was elected the President of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 2014). In 1921, He assumed the post of Commander-in-Chief and fought for the liberation of Anatolia from the Greek occupation. He won the battle of Sakarya. On September 19, 1921, the Turkish Grand National Assembly gave him the title of “Marshal” and “Ghazi”. On August 26, 1922, the invaders launched the Great Offensive against Greek forces. Five days later, he won the Commander-in-Field Battle on August 30, 1922. After the Lausanne Peace Conference, he was re-elected as president by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and then he led the Turkish War of Independence and signed the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923, which made Turkey a Republic. He founded the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923 (New World Encyclopedia, 2016).

Atatürk was elected its first president in 1923 and ushered in reforms and politics that modernized Turkey. He made political reforms, economic reforms, social reforms, legal reforms, and educational reforms and policies for the development of the Republic of Turkey. These reforms were a series of political, legal, religious, cultural, social, and economic policy changes designed to be a secular, modern nation-state by Atatürk. Many other changes were made by Atatürk and his administration. For example; the transition to multi-party political life in parliament, women's rights, surname law, co-education and education of girls, the assent of the new Latin alphabet, establishment of banking and industry system, gender equality, civil independence, Republic (representative democracy), abolition of Sultanate, etc. (Wikipedia, 2018).

Atatürk lived an ordinary life as in his childhood. He spent most of his life in wars and government affairs. In his personal life, he always engaged in state affairs and devoted his life to the development of his country. He was briefly married to Latife Uşaklıgil between 1923 and 1925 (The Biography.com, 2019). During his lifetime, Atatürk adopted thirteen children: a boy and twelve girls. Of these, the most famous is Sabiha Gökçen, Turkey's first female pilot and the world's first female fighter pilot. In 1934, he introduced surnames in Turkey, and he took the last name Ataturk, which means "Father of the Turks." He died on November 10, 1938, from cirrhosis of the liver (BBC History, 2015).

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a revolutionary who helped establish the Republic of Turkey. He was Turkey's first president and his reforms modernized the country (Wikipedia, 2018). He laid the foundations of modern Turkey and he left a legacy of the Republic of Turkey to the Turkish youth.

This article was written for the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey, especially for the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, and for all those who sacrificed their lives for Turkey.

With endless gratitude and respect...

NOTE: The last photo was taken in front of the Sydney Ataturk monument, which was built in memory of the love of the Australian government and people towards Ataturk and the great revolutions made by Ataturk.

CHAPTER 2: NEVSEHIR IN CAPPADOCIA - "ONE OF THE MOST DIFFERENT TOURIST DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD"

Cappadocia is a popular world-famous tourist destination, as it has many areas with unique geological, historic and cultural features.

Since the region is home to many civilizations, each city has its own architectural and cultural richness. In particular, the many churches, monasteries, underground cities and castles in Nevsehir reflect the history of these civilizations. For this reason, Nevsehir is especially important for tourism. There are many places "must-see" in Cappadocia like; the Fairy Chimney Rocks, Göreme National Park, underground cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu, Zelve National Park and Pasabag, Avanos (with its pottery and carpets), Uchisar and Ortahisar Rock Castle, Urgup, Ihlara valley, Hacibektas, Soganli and Sinasos ancient cities. Tourists from all parts of the world come to see Nevsehir.

Tourists who come here see both these natural formations and the churches, monasteries, underground cities and carved by humans over hundreds of years. There are many activities that tourists who visit here can do. These include hiking, hot air ballooning, horse-riding, quad bike tours (ATV - all-terrain vehicle), traditional Turkish dance, watching the sunset and sunrise and wine tasting in local wine cellars (Sansal, 1996).

Nevsehir has agricultural products that grow on its territory and traditional dishes made from them. Agriculture is still important in Nevsehir. Potatoes, red grapes, and pumpkins are produced in the region, and these products are exported and provide income both to the city and to the country. In addition, the grapes grown here are used in wine and grape molasses production. It has an important place in the world especially in terms of grape quality and high-quality wine production. “Turasan” and “Kocabag” are two important wine brands of Nevsehir. Local pumpkin seeds prepared with traditional cooking methods (roasted in milk) are very important for Nevsehir. They also have their own traditional dishes. Nevsehir is famous for its. Kebab cooked in a clay pot. It is a delicious traditional dish made with lamb meat, tomato, pepper, and garlic and slowly cooked over a wood fire in a clay pot. The clay pot is made from the special local soils of the region.

Nevsehir in Cappadocia is a unique place with its features. Millions of tourists visit the place every year because it has a unique natural beauty. This number increases every year and the popularity of the region in the world increases day by day.

CHAPTER 1: NEVSEHIR IN CAPPADOCIA - ''THE LAND OF BEAUTIFUL HORSES"

Nevsehir in Cappadocia is one of the most popular and famous tourist destinations in the world and Nevsehir has a lot of the Fairy chimney rocks consisting of many natural formations.

Nevsehir is a historical tourist destination and is located in the center of the Anatolian Region of Turkey. Cappadocia is a regional name and a Province of Turkey. The word “Cappadocia” means the land of beautiful horses. This region has five cities. These are; Nevsehir, Kirsehir, Kayseri, Aksaray and Nigde. Nevsehir is more popular than other cities because a large part of the Fairy Chimney Rocks are in this city.

Nevsehir has rich natural beauty and historical value. It has hosted many civilizations. The history of the Cappadocia region goes back to the paleolithic period. This region first hosted the Hitit civilization, then the Romans who became Christian. After many wars in the region, the Kingdom of Cappadocia was established in 32 BE. Towards the end of the 3rd century BE, the strength of the Romans began to be felt. In 17 AD, when the last King of Cappadocia (Archelaus) died, the region became a province of Rome. Cappadocia was conquered by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Ottoman Empire dominated this region until 1923 when Ataturk established The Republic of Turkey (Wikipedia.com, 2020)

Nevsehir has a fascinating natural environment: it has natural structures that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world - the Fairy Chimney Rocks. In addition, a large part of the Fairy Chimney Rocks are in Nevsehir. The Fairy Chimney Rocks were formed by erosion. Erosion formed the volcanic tuff over millions of years. The tuff was from volcanic eruptions from Mountain Hasan and Mountain Erciyes. These the Fairy Chimney Rocks took shape millions of years ago (Nationalgeographic.com, 2020).  Therefore, these natural structures are very important for the region and well protected by the people who manage the region. For hundreds of years, people have dug into the soft but firm volcanic tuff to create dwellings, monasteries, churches, and underground cities (Goturkey.com, 2020).

We have one more chapter for this beautiful place. See you next chapter dear readers...

MY EUROPEAN TOUR: EYOBUS 2017 (A Short Article)

I’ve always loved to travel and see new places in my life. I was searching for a European Tour while I was studying at University, but the tour prices were too expensive for me, so I made a promise to myself that I was going to save money when I started work to go on this tour. I saved money to go on this tour from when I started working at the hotel. When I applied for the tour, I asked my brother if he wanted to come with me, and my brother said he wanted to come and join me, so he applied, too. Before the tour started, I’d searched and studied about all the countries and cities included in this tour. Because I’d prepared a trip program (schedule a stroll) to visit many places in a shorter time, we were very excited when the tour started.

Our journey started in Istanbul and continued onward to Greece by bus. We met friends travelling with us from Istanbul to Greece, and we enjoyed the trip together. Later, we felt very tired, closed our eyes, and soon fell asleep. When we woke up, the bus had reached Thessaloniki. This experience made me truly believe in this European tour, fulfilling one of my dreams. I was especially happy to share this moment with my brother. We travelled through 18 countries and 21 cities by bus, including:

1.     Greece – Thessaloniki
2.     Serbia – Belgrade
3.     Austria – Vienna
4.     Czech Republic – Prague
5.     Netherlands – Amsterdam
6.     France – Paris, Cannes
7.     Monaco – Monte Carlo
8.     Vatican
9.     Croatia – Zagreb
10. Macedonia – Skopje
11. Slovakia – Bratislava
12. Germany – Berlin
13. Belgium- Brussels
14. Spain – Barcelona
15. Italy – Rome, Venice, and Pisa
16. Slovenia – Ljubljana, Lake of Bled
17. Bulgaria – Sofia

Every country and city was magnificent, and we saw so many places in these countries & cities. Our bus journey took 18 days and travelled about 10.000 km. This journey was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and I will never forget it.

BİLGİLENDİRME YAZISI: "MÜZE KART" HAKKINDA HER ŞEY...

Müzekart farkl kesimleri kapsayan çeşitliliğe sahiptir. Bunlar kısaca;

NOT 2: Müze kart ve Müze giriş fiyatları 1 Ekim 2018 tarihi itibariyle artmıştır.

(Not: Blog yazımın 2.
